Who Is Protected

The federal Fair Housing Act prohibits housing discrimination because of race, color, religion, sex (including sexual orientation and gender identity), disability, familial status (families with children under 18 and people who are pregnant) and national origin. The Florida Fair Housing Act provides the same protections under state law.

County and city laws in South Florida add more protections. Miami-Dade County's ordinance, for example, also covers ancestry, age, marital status, pregnancy, gender identity and expression, veteran status, source of income (such as housing vouchers and Social Security) and status as a victim of domestic violence or stalking. Broward and Palm Beach counties have their own ordinances. We follow every law that applies where the property is located.
